We were fortunate enough to already get an appointment at MD Anderson today. We went into thinking, "we'll just see", since we already liked the thoracic surgeon we've been meeting with at Memorial SW. Little did we know...the thoracic surgeon at MD Anderson had some good news for us. He said he does NOT think the entire lung will have to be removed - just the bottom lobe or two. He said he will most likely be able to leave the top right lobe, which will immediately fill the entire space that the other lobes occupied. He also said Brett will have ZERO problems after this surgery as far as breathing. He will be able to play basketball, ski, be in high altitude, jog, etc!!!! This is life changing. Brett was told before he wouldn't be able to be very active the rest of his life! Yikes!
The way the MD Anderson surgeons perform this surgery is far more advanced we learned. Their methods are 10 years ahead of the others we were looking into. The recovery time was cut down by 6 weeks!!! Our MD surgeon said Brett will go home the VERY next day (or two) and be good to go after a week or two. The previous doc said 6-8 weeks of doing nothing at home. And our MD surgeon said he will feel barely any pain, where the other doc said it was the most painful kind of surgery you can have. Big difference. We were stunned. Sorry if this sounds all jumbled! I'm so excited still! :)
We signed up right then for surgery for Monday, March 22 early that morning. I am so grateful for the MD surgeons! That entire facility is a world of its own in a league of its own. I was impressed from the moment I walked in. Everyone we encountered was helpful, courteous and HAPPY! We are so blessed to have this hospital in our backyard. People come from all over the world to MD Anderson and we couldn't be happier to be so close to it.
Thank you to everyone who has sent us encouraging emails, letters, etc. I read ALL of them to Brett and it helps us through each day - truly! Every day brings new challenges and worries but because of all of you guys we have been strong. All of you at RPC have made a huge, positive impact on us throughout this experience. We thank you for that. Our faith has grown tremendously during this and you all have been there every step of the way. Thank you to our friends and most of all family! Y'all are the BEST and more supportive family ever. We would not be able to go through all this without our wonderful family :)
We love you all so much! We'll keep ya posted.
